Grounding Tool · 6 Steps
A step-by-step walkthrough for when anxiety spikes and you need something to hold onto.
Something shifted. You felt it. Before you react, just name it. What happened? What did you hear, see, or feel that set this off?
Anxiety and defensiveness show up physically. Locating the feeling helps you work with it instead of through it. Where do you feel it right now?
Before your mind can think clearly, your body needs to regulate. One breath cycle — 4 counts in, 4 hold, 6 out.
Triggers often carry old weight. The intensity you're feeling may belong to a past moment more than this one. Ask yourself honestly:
You don't have to believe the first story your brain tells you. What is a kinder, more accurate interpretation of what just happened?
Choose a single word to carry with you — something that anchors you to who you actually are when you're at your best. Say it out loud if you can.
That's the work. Not perfection — just noticing, pausing, and choosing differently. Again and again.
